This week’s Great Site all started as a result of a blog post. Darren Solomon was writing a post for the blog on his Electronica group’s website when he discovered that you can embed more than one Youtube video in a web page, and play them simultaneously. Being the music lover that he is, he wanted to see if he could do something more interesting with this new found knowledge than having five videos, and boy did he succeed.

His first attempt led to this (Play a few of the videos together!). On those videos, he played all the instruments himself and all in the key of B flat.

“How amazing!” you say. I couldn’t agree more, but you haven’t seen the Great Site at all yet. Having discovered the fantastic sound he could make by himself, he then sent out emails, and “put up an open call on the website for submissions”.

The end result of Darren’s efforts was inbflat.net, “a collaborative music and spoken word project conceived by Darren Solomon from Science for Girls, and developed with contributions from users.”

The way things are going in this country at the moment, we all need a good laugh. You may ask “And where can I get a good laugh for free?”

My answer is simply: People. People in general say the funniest things, and it’s even funnier when they really mean it!

This weeks Great Sites are the “Overhead In” series: Overheard In Dublin, Overheard In Cork, Overheard In Manchester, Overheard In London and Overheard In Sydney.

Each “Overheard In” site contains a collection of user submitted overheard conversations, quotes, stories, and observations from the relevant area.

A large selection of submissions from Overheard In Dublin have been published in three very successful books.

If you have a funny quote from any of those places, why not post it there for the world to see, anonymously of course!

You know that here at Musicalit.ie we like nothing better than getting our teeth into a good website, whether it be practical, interesting or just plain fun. Every once in a while, we like to tell you all about them. So, why are you still reading this, check out our review of recyclethis.co.uk!

This week, it’s the turn of recyclethis.co.uk. “As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention”, and this was certainly true for Louisa Parry and John Leach when they set up their site asking the simple question: How can I recycle this?

This site started from a bowl of pistachio nut shells.

After we gorged ourselves on their lovely innards, they, the shells, just sat there, looking useful and versatile – but we [had] no idea what we could possibly do with them. Just throwing them on the compost heap seemed a waste – all the effort to make them tough and solid, and here we were just hoping they’d rot back down to mulch before the potatoes needed earthing up.

When we thought about it, we were in the same position with lots of things: leftover bits of food, old household items, empty containers of all shapes and sizes…

And so this site was born.

Updates are posted every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. and anyone is free to ask “How can I recycle…….”
